Persuasive Speech Topics

See the topics below in Week 4.

To be successful in delivering your speech there are two things you need to keep in mind:

1.  Research your topic properly.

2.  Prepare your speech through doing some thorough research, finding good facts to support
your point of view and practice the delivery
of your speech.

Remember to use your
voice and fabulous reading skills to "hook"

Persuasive Speech Topics

Below are the Persuasive Speech topics that we have all agreed upon in class.
Two minutes in length please team!

This is your chance to speak your mind! A persuasive speech requires you to convince your audience the you have a blievable argument as a topic!

1.  Kids under 15 shouldn't have Facebook Pages?

2.  Should cellphones be allowed/not allowed at school?

3.  Should homework be given to children?

4.  Should we have streamed classes at Hereworth School?

5.  Should children who live on farms be allowed
to drive farm vehicles?

Alternatively!!  As discussed in class if you have a topic that you feel is "subjective" and that is
appropriate that will allow others
to reflect upon (in terms of their current personal opinion), then please see me to confirm that the
topic matter is suitable.

Speeches are due to be delivered to 7MS audience Monday 27 Nov and Tues 28 Nov - Week 7.

Spelling:

This weeks words will be tested on the Friday
after Labour Weekend boys.

Preparation for your Literacy Examination.

Please do some work of Labour Weekend.  Enjoy your time off, but also remember how soon the exams will be upon you.  Remember the 4 words on the back wall.....Attitude, Aspire, Commitment and Achieve!!!!!

Please!!!!! revise over the following sections of your Action in English book boys for your
Literacy exam in Week 3.

Word Classes - Ensure you know and can identify the right names of words and how to place or use them in a sentence.

Punctuation - Please recap over all the punctuation marks and be sure you understand how to use them in written language, when reading and identify what punctuation is missing or needs to be corrected in a sentence, paragraph or exert of text.

Language Skills - To create interesting text, authors use synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, homophones, singular and plural words to make their stories understandable.  You will need to know these specific language skills and identify them for your literacy exam boys.

We will continue to undertake our Weekly Comprehension, but two a week (uping the anti team!!) until Week 8, after PAT's are completed!!!

A writing sample will be conducted after the end of year examinations.

There is a lot on boys and you need to ensure you "prepare" to do well and achieve the best you can deliver.

Before the end of the term, remember as discussed in class you will have PAT testing.

I will also be conducting a Spelling test, a spelling test of words that are commonly misspelt "adult" frequent words.  The words you get incorrect will become your spelling words.

As discussed boys, all of you will have a Probe (running record) taken again before the end of the term to assess your reading age and comprehension ability.

Science

Boys you need to prepare for your Science Examination in Week 3.

Please revise:

Scientific Equipment - what are their names.

Explain and know the Scientific Method.

Know the explanation for words in the back of your Glossary.

Know what an eco system is, what a food chain is, a habitat and a niche.

Have an understanding of an environment impact that is affecting Planet Earth.  What is it, how has it occured and what can we do to reduce the impact it is having.

Water cycle - know the different aspects and words associated with the Water Cycle.

Why are these countries at war?  Or why do you think they could potentially be at war with each other?
What is causing or did cause the conflict?

Has it got something to do with their leader and the way in which their country is governed?

Think about and reflect on the discussions we have had about countries that are led by dictators and countries that may be communist versus countries that are democratic in our last Social Science unit and the overlap with this Social Science unit!!

Aren't we lucky to have a vote and a say in how we choose to live in NZ!!!!!

Conflict - E Project. - Conflict Scenario

On Friday in class we discussed the Scenario about the two neighbours who wanted to build a fence.  One neighbour (Mr O'Shaughnessy) wanted to build a corrugated iron fence and the other neighbour (Mr Ellingham) wanted to build a stone and brick fence.
Mr O'Shaughnessy was happy for his neighbour to build the stone and brick fence, but didn't have any further money to contribute to making the stone and brick fence. He said he would only be able to pay half of the cost of the corrugated iron fence if the stone and brick fence was built.  The other neighbour, Mr Ellingham wasn't happy about the fact that this would mean he would have to pay the rest of the cost himself.
After years of living happily side by side as neighbours...this caused some conflict between them.

In your e- project on a new slide - Write the title "Conflict and Mediation".
Copy on that slide the scenario.

Write in the definitiion of the word "Mediation".
Ask Mum and Dad to help explain the role of a mediator.  How could a mediator help these two neighbours to resolve their problem?
Think about this trival conflict and write your thoughts on a slide on how a mediator might be able to help resolve the problem and what solution they might decide as the way forward for the two neighbours.

Is any one right and is anyone wrong?  What do you think?

Thinking about Rules and Laws?

Boys before Friday 4 August you need to be up to speed with your e-project or you will fall behind.  Can you please answer these questions relating to Rules and Laws
in your e-project.
I want you to really think about these questions and we will discuss how they relate to conflict in class.

What is a rule?
Why are rules made?
How are rules helpful?
Think about rules at home and rules at school.ive me a couple of examples
Do you think they are sensible rules and do you
agree with them?
Is there a consequence if you break those rules?
 it?

What is a law?

Can you think of an example of a law that affects
you directly whether it be on the way to school, or
the way people behave in the community.
Who enforces these laws and why? What would
our society in New Zealand be like if we didn't have
laws.

Personal Speech

As part of our studies on conflict I would like you to produce a 2 minute speech on the following topic.
You need to present your speech in Week 7.
When you write your speech think about you new "understanding" and "knowledge" about conflict.
If you want to use digital technology to help assist the presentation of your speech as a tool - go for it, but you must create a formal speech.  If you don't want to use digital technology that is fine too!

Check out the following "You tube clip" on how to create a speech and make the content of it interesting for your audience.  Click on the link below.

Here are the three topics you can write your speech upon.
Select just one.  Remember, when you present it to speak with clarity and with conviction....no mumbling!

1. Conflict can be healthy and a necessary part of life?

2. There are always ways to avoid conflict between people.

3. When we make compromise no one wins and everyone loses.

Conflict - E Project.

Please create a new E-project to work upon independently for our Social Science Topic - Conflict.

In the following sequence as separate slides can you please answer or create the following requests and answers to the following questions.

Remember to "think" and think bigger picture when you develop and write in your answers.

Create a Title Page with interesting fonts and maybe some pictures....it' your design and your project.  But push yourself to develop and create something impressive!

Questions to Think about!!
\
Question One:  What is conflict?

Question Two:  How does conflict occur?

Question Three:  Provide three different types of conflict with an example to demonstrate what you mean.

Question Four:  Differences of Opinion

Sometimes we have differences of opinion on really important issues that affect our lifestyle and some differences of opinions over really trivial matters.   Please list a couple of situations at home or school that have lead you to have a difference of opinion.

Question Five:  Have you experienced conflict and was there a consequence from that conflict arising?  Explain what happened.

Question Six:  How was it resolved?  Explain how you managed the situation.  Were you happy with the outcome? Do you think you have learnt something from that conflict?  Will it help you next time you get into a situation where you can see there might be some conflict?

Think about, Why do problems and conflict occur?
Is there a way for these problems to be overcome?

Here is an example; "why do we have referees in rugby, football and hockey'? what would be the consequence if two sports teams did not accept the referee's decision?

Social Science:

Create a new slide on your e-project on "Our Place in the World". You may have to do a quite a bit of research to answer this question.

Maybe discuss it with Mum and Dad or Gran and Pop?

Tell me in a couple of sentences and justify how you know!! Think about how Gran and Pop used to live, versus Mum and Dad, versus yourself.

WHY IS NEW ZEALAND A PROGRESSIVE AND INNOVATIVE COUNTRY?

Would you consider it to be a 21st Century Country?
Here's some clues to help you start thinking.

New Zealand isn't that old...look back at some old pictures of NZ in the past and look at what you see - think about what people have created e.g tiny townships to big cities, little ports to huge container wharfs and ports that now house Cruise Liners.....how the country has changed to accomodate growth of population, housing, old gravel roads to motorways, development of orchards, vineyards, productive farms.
The economy, who used to work and who used to be at home.
How have products changed...from phones, to schools, to irrigation on farms to tractors - who has created this 21st Century

Find 3 products (Past and Present) that are NZ made.

Copy and Past the old version and the new improved model!!

'Treaty of Waitangi'

Research the following questions on the Treaty of Waitangi to complete your e-project "Our Place in the World".

1.  List 3 new interesting facts you did not know about this key date in New Zealand's history.

2.  When is Waitangi Day commemorated?

3.  Why is it called the Treaty of Waitangi?  Why is it a significant document?

4.  What was the date and the year that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed?

5.  What two languages were the Treaty versions written in?  Can you find a piture of each to support your response as evidence.

6.  Where is the original copy of the Treaty of Waitangi held now?

7.  Who is James Cook and when did he arrive in New Zealand?

Social Science: Our Place in the World - Booklet

Compare and Contrast (Critical Thinking)

NZ "Our Place in the World" vs "Your chosen country" Their place in the World

Can you please create a Booklet/Powerpoint for "Our Place in the World" on your Chrome Books boys.

I will discuss this with you in class - this work will be internally assessed - please remember what is written on the back wall of our classroom!!

Aspire, Achievement, Attitude and Commitment!!

You might choose to present your "Our Place in the World" classroom work in another format....I will leave that for you to decide.

I would like you to create and follow in sequential order the weekly work you are researching and critically thinking about as you begin to understand and appreciate "why" New Zealand is a unique and special country to be blessed to live in.

Please create a "title page" - "Our Place in the World". The title page is your own design to go in front of last weeks questions on Immigration. Make it relevant to the topic for Social Science that we are learning about boys.

ON the next page/slide, can you please add in last weeks questions and your thinking and understanding on Immigration and why people would want to move to Godzone/NZ!

This week can you please answer the inquiry questions below "after" you have created a page/s with the four headings: Education, Lifestyle, Food and Recreation. For each of these headings I would like you to compare and contrast "our place NZ" and these topics with a country of your choice and see what are the differences and similarities. Add in little bits of information to explain what is happening in your pictures so we know what they represent.
e.g Food - NZ (Roast Lamb) - Japan (Sushi)

Think about a country you would like to choose to compare and contrast these for topics.

Search Google and look for information and pictures to support differences that you discover as you Compare and Contrast NZ with your country of choice.

Explain under each topic on your spreadsheet the following questions with well thought out answers to support your thinking. You may need to create additional pages after selecting pictures that represent NZ and your chosen country.

1. What have you discovered and what did you see when you researched pictures on and information on Google on Education?

2.What you think are the differences in the way we live/lifestyles? Is NZ life easier? Why?

3.Why do you think our diets and food we eat are different?

4.How do the people in your chosen country undertake recreation. What similarities or differences have you discovered.

Next section: Government/Politics

Find a picture of our most famous parliamentary building. Compare it with the architecture of the Parliamentary building of your chosen country.

Answer these questions boys:

Who determines how we live in NZ?
How does it affect our daily lives?
Do you like the way we live?
Who determines comes into this country?
Do you think when people immigrate into NZ they should live like New Zealanders and take on the cultures of our country or live like they would in their home country?
Think about your chosen country? Would you live there. Why/Why not?

Please complete this by next Monday 28 May 2017 ready to discuss.

Science:

Hi Boys - Have you thought about and finalised what you are doing for your self led investigation?  You need to supply this information to me in Science before the end of Week 5.  You need to work in pairs to ensure that you both contribute to your investigation working together as a team.

Remember - don't make it too complicated.  The simpler the better.
The equipment that you need to use is the Science equipment in the Science Lab.

Self Led Investigation Details:

Your investigation needs to follow the whole scienitific method.  I need to know the following information:

1.  What is the investigation and what are you trying to find out?
2.  What Science Equipment do you require.
3.  Make your hypotheses.
4.  Trial, test, make observations, record your data, what are the results of your experiment?
5.  Conclusion - what did you discover?  Why?

This is an assessed piece of work boys.  I will provide you with the success criteria in Science.

Have fun and enjoy being a Scientist and discovering the World around you!!

In your Science Glossary at the back of your SCIENCE book, please add the word RESPIRE.  What does this mean boys?

Social Science: Our Place in the World

I want you to think about New Zealand as a country and what it offers on the World stage in terms of:

Lifestyle - Food, Housing, Employment (Jobs)
Economy - Opportunities in a democratic country
Culture + Government - How are we governed in terms of what we are allowed to do on a daily basis and how we are allowed to go about our everyday lives?

In class in collaborative groups we will discuss these 4 significant features of "life in NZ".

In your Literacy book by Thursday Morning (18th May 2017), can you please research and write in your books your thoughts on the following;

What is immigration?
Why do people want to become citizens of New Zealand?
Tell me three reasons why those people might want to leave their country to come and live in New Zealand?

Ask Mum and Dad to help you think this through or ask your teacher on prep duty boarders.

Science:

In Week 7 you will be conducting your own "self led Science Investigtion" and working through the whole
Scientific Process with a buddy as a team of two.

You need to learn to become independent "thinkers" and "work" as Scientists yourself to discover the "world around you" and how Science effects us in everyday life.

Begin to think about a science investigation that you would like to conduct with a buddy for Week 7, 8 and 9.

Think about all the different types of approaches and equipment we have used in Term One and Term Two.

What would you like to investigate.

Get creative.
Think critically about your
predictions and what your
hypotheses might be?

Come to me by 3pm, Friday 2 June 2017 and tell me what your self led Science Investigation is going to be upon.

Can't wait to find out what your going to investigate boys!!
