Year 8 End of Year Exams:

EXAM TIMETABLE - WEEK THREE, TERM FOUR, 2017:

All exams are set to be completed within one hour plus ten minutes reading time. Any boys who, through, a SPELD assessment, have been identified as requiring extra time will receive an additional 20 minutes. Boys are encouraged to utilise all allocated time and, if they finish early, to spend the time remaining to go back and re-read/check and work through responses.


Boys who require a reader/ writer will work in a separate area of the school outside the classroom. Any questions please see your classroom teacher.


Languages Assessments, for Year 8, only will be completed in regular Languages sessions.

It is important to revise and prepare for the exams in Week 3.  In the table below you will find the areas to focus on. If you are not sure about something, or feel you have insufficient resources to prepare for the exam it is important to ask your teacher - before the exam.




Maths Exam

  • Square and cubed numbers
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages - find fractions, decimals, and percentages of amounts expressed as whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals. Also know the equivalent decimal and percentage forms for everyday fractions.

Measurement and Geometry
  • Conversions between units of measurement -  metric units for length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), temperature, angle, and time.
  • Perimeter, area and volume of 2 and 3D shapes - using side or edge lengths to find the perimeters and areas of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles and the volumes of cuboids.
  • Transformations - rotation, translation, enlargement, reflection - identify and describe the transformations that have produced given shapes or patterns;
Problem Solving related to any of the three strands above

Look back through your books; work through specific tasks on IXL and focus on the areas you find difficult
Literacy Exam
There will be no writing section. A writing sample will be completed for all Year 7 & 8 boys in Week 5

To revise boys should review the following:

Year 7:
Cloze Reading - Comprehension
Spelling - Identifying correct spelling as well as common errors
Parts of Speech - Nouns, Verbs, Prepositions etc 
Contractions
Proofreading
Punctuation
Vocabulary
Synonyms & Antonyms


Year 8:
Punctuation, including apostrophes
Contractions
Conjunctions
Cloze Procedure
Spelling
Simple and Compound sentences
Prefixes &Suffixes
Synonyms and Antonyms

Figures of Speech:  Similes, Metaphors, Hyperbole, Idioms, Interjection, Personification, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration

Subject and Predicate

For revision the boys can use their Action English Books, complete tasks set through Google Classroom and there will be some exercises completed within classes in the next 2 weeks to help develop understanding. 


Science Exam
Year 7: boys need to revisit:

  • Equipment labeling
  • Scientific method
  • Scientific vocabulary
  • Water Cycle
  • Habitat and Environment
  • Food Chains
  • Scientific thinking(this section is about observation, interpretation and application of skills and cannot be revised for)


Year 8:

  • Evolution - revision and recall section
  • Thinking with Evidence - unseen section so cannot be revised - application of skills

There will also be a Year 8 Languages assessment in Week 3:

Terms 3 & 4 te reo Māori and tikanga classwork:
  • te reo Māori syllables (alphabet)
  • Numbers 0-150
  • Days and Months
  • whakataukī (proverbs)
  • Hei Mihi information
  • Colours (Ngā tae)
  • Greetings and classroom expressions
  • word meanings - English & Māori
Any outstanding Tuakana/ teina class research work is due this Thursday - you know who you are boys!
